Samuel Wyatt
In my twenty-year profession as a garden designer and builder, drawing from my degree in Sculpture from the Massachusetts College of Art, I explored how native plants, stone, and mosses could be employed sculpturally to create contemplative spaces of meditation and beauty. The moss and stone gardens of Japan became my obsession. They taught me the power of natural beauty to transport and transform. As I transitioned to my studio practice with painting, I found myself inspired to navigate the concepts of light, shadow, decay and rebirth through watercolor and oil.
I am circling back to working in space with sculpture, combining all of these materials and ideas to form new ways of engaging with these media. I currently participate in exhibits along the East Coast and maintain an active studio in Vermont. I am fascinated by the effect of time on materials both manmade and natural, and find myself drawn to spaces where structures are decaying and nature is rebounding.
